LETTER FROM GLOBALPLATFORM'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - KEVIN GILLICK
On behalf of the GlobalPlatform Board of Directors, I would like to extend our very best wishes to you for a healthy and prosperous New Year. As we begin another ambitious year for GlobalPlatform, 2009 also marks our 10 year anniversary as an independent, member-driven industry specifications development body.
10 Year Anniversary Milestone
Over the past decade GlobalPlatform members have made significant contributions to the creation of an open and interoperable environment for smart cards, smart card acceptance devices and back-end systems. Indeed GlobalPlatform is now considered the de facto standard for smart card infrastructure.
But how did we get started? What have been some of our key achievements? How have we adapted as an organization over time and what are our future priorities?
To answer these questions, we recently contributed an informative article to Smart Card Technology International 2009 which we are delighted to share with you in this newsletter.
GlobalPlatform Technology Now Supports Internet Connectivity
Recently released 'Amendment B' of Card Specification v2.2 now aligns GlobalPlatform smart card technology with web services. This important contribution to the market ensures that a mechanism for an application provider to perform remote management of its applets using HTTP communication and SSL cryptographic protocols is defined in a uniform and highly specified manner.

New Chairman of the Card Committee
GlobalPlatform Card Committee Chairman, Mr. Jean-Loup Depinay of Oberthur Technologies, was voted onto the Board of Directors in our annual October election. As such, he has stepped down from his duties in the Card Committee and a 'selection committee' was formed to evaluate candidates for his replacement. The review of candidates was completed in December and we are now pleased to announce that Mr. Karl Eglof Hartel of Giesecke & Devrient has been appointed to succeed Jean-Loup.
Like many colleagues at G&D, Karl has been actively engaged in the activities of GlobalPlatform including the Card Specifications Working Group and the Mobile Task Force. His organization, communication and leadership skills coupled with his strong technical background and knowledge of GlobalPlatform make him an outstanding candidate to direct the activities of the Card Committee in 2009.
The Board of Directors congratulates Karl on his appointment and looks forward to working closely with him in the year ahead.
New Board of Directors Representative from Gemalto
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Christoph Siegelin, Director of Marketing and Business Development in the Financial Services and Retail division at Gemalto will occupy the Board seat previously held by Mr. Marc Birkner. Marc recently left Gemalto to pursue other business interests having served GlobalPlatform for several years – first as a member representative to the Marketing Centre and later as a member of the Board of Directors.
We are very grateful for Marc's dedicated service to the organization and wish him well in his new endeavor. We also look forward to Christoph's participation on the Board of Directors and adding a new voice in our discussions.
Security News TV Podcast
GlobalPlatform recently collaborated with a new online portal called Security News TV to share the organization's perspective on the benefits of its technology in the security industry. This resulted in a podcast highlighting how GlobalPlatform is addressing current and expected future security challenges and also the importance of standards and interoperability in the marketplace going forward.
